When you run a business, it’s crucial that you look after your employees, as your employees are the heart of any business. If you think about it, without them, your revenue will drop and your profits will also drop, which is something you never want to happen.
With the above in mind, it should always be at the forefront of your mind to keep your employees happy. No matter the type of business you run, whether it’s a medical practice, a fitness studio, a marketing firm or an accountancy, you should have certain processes in place to look after them.
The processes can vary, from offering bonus payments for hard work, keeping the workplace a motivational space and making sure you look after their work needs – for example, if you run a medical practice, you should make sure your employees have medical indemnity for their own peace of mind. Below we look into three ways to look after your employees at work.
Ways to look after your employees at work
Create a positive environment
Your workplace will have a direct impact on how your employees feel when they are coming to work. No matter the environment they work in, try to improve it and make it a welcoming space – if it’s dark and gloomy, you run the risk of them wanting to leave for a more motivational place! Things like plants add colour to the workspace, and a nice smell creates a positive environment and so does making sure it’s tidy. Your lighting and collaborative areas will also help.
If you need inspiration, take a look at Pinterest as often, you’ll find some good examples of a motivating office space.
Look after your employee’s interests
Have your employee’s interests woven into your company morals – a happy employee means they will perform better when working. Make sure you have their insurance covered, offer extra time off to see their children and desirable working hours. You can buy fruit for the workplace to help with their diet and provide breakfast so that they don’t skip that meal due to being busy. There are so many ways that you can support your employee’s interests.
Offer financial rewards
When your employees are performing well, offer financial rewards to show you appreciate them. When KPIs (Key performance indicators) are hit, give them a monthly bonus or a bonus every three months. You could have a reward scheme in place, which is tiered depending on results. The entry reward could be a gift voucher or a present, like an espresso martini gift set, then the next level a meal out, with the final level being a bigger bonus.
Having a tiered system gives you something for your employees to aim for and it allows you to budget for the different tiers as you will know how your employees are doing and how near they are to achieving each tier. When you have a lot of employees doing well, you may want to consider a corporate event as this is a way to reward everyone for their hard work instead of individuals.
