Life in Lockdown | Are we becoming complacent?

May 7, 2020

Life In Lockdown… Once a week I pull on my big girl pants and venture out into the outside world, Saving up all the necessary chores to be completed in one big trip. From checking on our old house, going to the post office, shopping etc.

Life In Lockdown – Becoming complacent?

Life In Lockdown

Mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about my chore day. On one hand, I know that these tasks need to be completed so I have to venture out and follow all the necessary guidance. On the other hand, I’m grateful that I’m able to have those few hours to myself. Very selfish I know and I am privileged to have that time – not everyone has that option.

As lockdown began the roads were quiet, the initial wave of stockpiling slowed down and the queues at supermarkets reduced. Everyone was aware of the two-metre social distancing guidance and feared to get close to others.

It’s getting busier

This week, however, I have noticed just how much traffic is on the road. It’s no longer just trucks, delivery vans and emergency services. There are tailbacks on the main roads, with families out and about in their cars. The queues are back to get into the supermarkets and then some. With couples and families waiting in line despite the signs stating one person per family group. Children are running around the supermarkets and nobody seems bothered about the one-way system down the aisles. The social distancing of two-metres is getting ignored and don’t get me started on the people who opt to smoke whilst in queues!

Are people feeling complacent?

It would be easy to look outside the window and feel as though the world has returned to normal. Has everyone started feeling complacent that the virus hasn’t affected their lives so far so what’s the point of continuing to lockdown? Do they feel comfortable enough to be outside more regularly, simply heading out to pop to the shop for one or two things instead of waiting and getting one big shop?

Passed the peak?

Whilst the COVID-19 numbers appear to be falling and thoughts that we are past the peak – I’m not sure we are ready to go rushing out into the outside world. Returning to normal too soon and we could see that the peak we’ve experienced was just a hill, with the mountain still ahead of us.

Stay home, stay safe, wash your hands and follow the guidelines
