As a mum and parent governor, I understand the importance of giving children a healthy start to the day by providing them with breakfast.
Unfortunately, not all children have access to this vital nourishment – and Kellogg’s has become more and more concerned about the effect that this crucial lack of morning brain fuel is having on our children’s education.
It is for this reason they commissioned a study to uncover the extent of children affected by this problem – and its shocking findings show that the vital work which they and their partners carry out as part of the Breakfast Club programme has become more important than ever.
The research revealed:
- Children arriving at school hungry are missing the learning equivalent of 70% of one school term over their entire primary school life;
- Over a quarter (28%) of teachers claim that there has been an increase in children arriving at school hungry;
- One in four teachers has seen a child fall asleep in the classroom due to a lack of food or drink.
