One thing many parents get excited to do and later regret is to go on a road trip with their kids. Between arguing kids and way too much energy built up from sitting. With a few tricks, you can calm things down and make your trip a lot more enjoyable.
Plan breaks and rest stops
Plan plenty of rest stops that allow you to get the kids out of the car. These stops can be rest stops on the road, truck stops, or out of the way museums and attractions that catch your interest. If you can’t find a place with something interesting to walk and see look for a big open space. Use this space to run off your kid’s excess energy. A great way to do this is to play tag or have your kids race each other.
Snacks, snacks and more snacks
Pack plenty of snacks before going on your trip. Kids like to munch when they are bored so having a stash of healthy snacks will give you a handy tool to calm them down when they start to get cranky. This will help you save a lot of money over buying fast food or snacks at a convenience store or gas station during your trip.
Technology can be your friend
While too much time with electronics is not healthy for kids there is a time and place for them and road trips are the perfect time to allow your kids some screen time. Take advantage of electronic devices to keep kids occupied and out of trouble. Be sure to grab a couple of extra chargers and some headphones before you leave. This will help prevent having to grab a charger on the road and the headphones will save your sanity.
Positive reinforcement
Use positive reinforcement to encourage your kids to behave. A reward at the end of the trip like a stop at the ice cream shop or spending money for your vacation is a great way to do this. Let your kids know what they will get if they are good on your road trip and keep reminding them.
