Want your child to eat a wider variety of foods? Want to end the eating battles? Try these tips to help your toddler eat a wider variety of foods each day.
Has this ever happened to you? You have made a meal, and it doesn’t really matter which meal it is, breakfast, lunch or dinner. You set the food down in front of your child and soon the waterworks start. “I don’t want this. I don’t like it?” Sometimes, even before the first bite. It is frustrating. You know your child has to eat more than macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets, but they are just not having it. Use these ideas to make mealtimes a little more enjoyable.
Making mealtimes a little more enjoyable
Make it Fun
Sometimes dinner isn’t about what the child wants to eat, it is giving them something else to focus on. So make it fun. You can buy special placemats that keep kids entertained as they eat or give kids their own dining set. The Tum Tum Eco Cloud Dining set to give even young children the ability to feed themselves. It is made from bamboo fibre and has nifty design features like steeper sides to help little ones scoop up food more easily. The accompanying cup is also perfect for little fingers. For kids who hate their food touching, there are even separate sections on the plate. These dishes are eco-friendly and give kids a sense of accomplishment. Not to mention, the plates are just fun.
Kids in the Kitchen
If kids have a hand in making a meal, they are more likely to eat it. Just about all kids can help in the kitchen, what they can do depends on their age. Even the youngest kids can help with putting ingredients in the bowl or help to stir. As kids get a little older they can help cut vegetables and even help with the cooking parts. Once the kids are invested in a meal, they want to to eat it.
Kid’s Choice
Let kids feel like they have the power. I don’t mean they only eat what they want. Give them choices. If you are choosing between carrots and peas, ask your child. Only give children two choices, maybe three at the most. Ask your child, what vegetables do you want with dinner, peas or carrots?
Find Kid Friendly Recipes
Find recipes that kids will love. Pinterest is packed with kid-friendly recipes. Some of my favorite child-friendly recipes are:
Broccoli and Apple Salad – This recipe is filled with healthy ingredients and is low in fat. It is perfect for kids who are hesitant to eat vegetables.
Crockpot Cheeseburger Joes – These can be used as a base to add more vegetables in or served over rice or noodles instead of a sandwich.
Breakfast Sushi – This is just delicious and fun. Kids can help make these before eating them and the kids will love it.
Pizza Quesadillas – These quesadillas are a good way to get kids used to eating quesadillas before slowly adding more vegetables and other meats.
Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies – Healthy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies – Kids love cookies. These cookies are packed with healthy ingredients that are hidden inside of a cookie. Add chocolate chips is your child doesn’t like raisins.
By adding a few of these tips to your everyday meals, you can slowly increase the number of foods your child will love and start to end the mealtime struggles.
