As a family, we have had Netflix for quite a while and have been enjoying the selection of films and series available. Recently we discovered a section of films that were based on books, and with any excuse to get the children reading more (although Roo is already a bookworm) we have been trying to watch the films and read the corresponding book.
Middle School was one of the more recent additions to this section with Roo enjoying the film for the first time during the recent half term holidays. I must confess to thinking that there was only one book in the Middle School book series, however, there are in fact nine novels to enjoy. Roo was lucky enough to have the first three novels sent over recently by Penguin Books for her to acquaint herself with the storyline.

Rafe Khatchadorian has enough problems at home without throwing his first year of middle school into the mix. Luckily, he’s got an ace plan for the best year ever, if only he can pull it off. Using his epic imagination and with a little help from his scheming best friend Leo, he tries to break every rule in his school’s oppressive Code of Conduct. But when Rafe’s game starts to catch up with him and Principal Dwight fights back, he’ll have to decide if winning is all that matters, or if he’s finally ready to face the rules, bullies, and truths he’s been avoiding.
The Middle School book package arrived just before we went on holiday for the weekend, which was great timing as it gave Roo the opportunity to take one the books with her to enjoy on the Eurostar. Roo has always been a bit of a bookworm with his digesting a few chapters of a book before bed each night.
Whilst we were away she managed to read the first book and wanted to wait to devour the second one until she had re-watched the Middle School Movie on Netflix.

Netflix – Middle School: The WORST Years of my Life
Having already watched the Middle School Movie during half term, Roo was keen to re-watch it once she had finished the first book. Eager to see how the book and film corresponded with each other and to see the drawings contained within the book come to life onscreen.
With Roo being a similar age to Rafe and his classmates I feel that this made it easier for her to understand the struggles and storyline within the movie and books. The underlying romance within the movie caught Roo’s attention and she was pleased to see the characters enjoy a kiss at the end.

Both the books and the Netflix movie are aimed at children between 7-12 years, and Roo would highly recommend them to all tweens!
