How well do babies see?

April 16, 2016

From the moment that your baby is placed in your arms, you can’t help but sit and stare at them, taking in each feature from their button nose, soft skin, and cute little eyelashes. As they open their eyes to look at the world around them you sit in awe at their beautiful, perfect eyes. I can remember having those first few moments which each of my children, although Roo hardly opened her eyes for the first two weeks but when she did and we managed to catch a glimpse of her big beautiful blue eyes it was worth the wait.

As babies grow they start to take more notice of the world around them and I have to admit to wondering what they can see and what they take notice off because they recognise the sound. When I watch Piglet playing and I talk to her she will instantly turn her face towards me and smile, even if I am across the room from her. It is, however, when I am up close to her and she is able to reach out and touch my face, grab my glasses or pull my hair that I can see that she is exploring my face just as I have explored hers.

Vision Direct, Europe’s largest online retailer of contact lenses, has launched a new interactive tool ‘How well do babies see’? Designed by their expert opticians, the baby sight tool shows how normal eyesight develops over the first year. You can see the tool here: http://www.visiondirect.co.uk/baby-sight-tool

This interactive tool gives parents the opportunity to see the world through their baby’s eyes.

It is fascinating to see just how much their eyesight changes over the first year, from those early days of just shapes and grey to being able to see things in colour as well as the world around them.
