A year or two ago I took Roo to a local science fair that had been organised by one of the offshore companies that operate in our area. During the fair she was able to see various technologies used within the offshore industry alongside activities that she was able to get involved in. Ever since we attended the science fair she has had a love of understanding how things work, why they work the way that they do and how technology is used within everyday life.
Like any parent I want to embrace the love of a subject for as long as it lasts so when we were sent the DIY electro dough kit from Technology Will Save Us I was eager to see what Roo would make of the kit and whether it would challenge her science knowledge.

How the DIY electro dough kit works
To make a circuit, an electric current must flow in an unbroken path. By placing LEDs or a buzzer in this path you can create light and sound. Putting a switch in the circuit will break the path giving you a way to turn your circuit on and off.
The instruction card included within the kit gives you six different circuit suggestions for you to try out. However, you are free to make the circuits in any way your children’s creative brain comes up with.
Using the salt dough recipe included in the kit or ready-made play dough, you are able to use this as a resistor within the circuits however, make sure that the different dough shapes are not touching as the electricity will take the shortest circuit and will bypass the LED or buzzer you have included within the circuit.

Watching Roo open and set up the kit was a lovely sight to see as she was so excited about what the kit would contain and how it worked. Reading through the instructions she decided to follow the six different circuit suggestions to start off with to get acquainted with the kit and how it all works.
Learning through play she was able to see that the electricity needed to flow around the circuit and needed to make sure that she had the right LED leg to make the circuit complete. With lots of trial and error she was able to see the way in which she could make a completed circuit adding in different amounts of LEDs and the buzzer.
Overall it was a big hit and she has already taken a look at the Technology Will Save Us shop to see what she’d like to find under the Christmas tree.
