One of the first things we did to our house when we move in some nine years ago was to replace the kitchen. It originally had blown vinyl wallpaper, an old-fashioned sink in which the sink and draining board was the top of an entire unit, and it was generally very dated and past it’s best. We replaced the kitchen with a beach style kitchen with black worktops. At the same time we added basic square tiles up to the wall cabinets and added a coat of paint to the walls.
With hindsight we should have had the room re-plastered as beneath the blown vinyl wallpaper lay uneven walls, especially were a damp-proof course was added years before and they hadn’t really blended the plaster against the original. The coat of paint we added hasn’t really done anything to hide the unevenness and this is how it has stayed for the past nine years.
So this summer we have decided to update the kitchen a little without replacing the cabinets and worktops as they are still in good condition. As it would be difficult to re-plaster the room without much upheaval we have opted to tile the walls throughout the kitchen.
We’ve managed to find some similar tiles to the ones we used within our bathroom makeover however in white in order to give a nice crisp, clean look to the room. The plan is for them to be placed in a brick style like the bathroom which I think makes the space look bigger (much-needed when you only have small galley kitchen).
Plan of action
- Gather quotes from some local builders to cost out the works
- Double check the tiles to make sure they are the ones we want
- Still undecided about whether or not to replace the floor tiles – research floor tiles
- Look for fabulous kitchen accessories to kit out the new brighter, lighter space (got to have a new accessory or two)
